Aan een dominee uit de Gereformeerde Gemeenten. Ik kom uit de Ger. Gem. (NRC) in Canada. Mijn vraag is: Antwoordt God door middel van dromen?
Ik ben een vrouw van achter in de 20. Toen ik jonger was, was ik bezorgd en boos dat ik geen vriendje had. Naarmate ik ouder werd, begon ik te begrijpen dat het niet het belangrijkste in het leven is om een vriendje te hebben en te trouwen. Ik dacht er niet eens aan om een vriendje te hebben en opeens werd ik in een droom wakker en voelde ik dat de Heere me liet zien dat ik naar Nederland moest gaan, omdat daar misschien een jongen voor me is. Ik weet niet of ik in dromen moet geloven, of dat het allemaal fantasie is?
Ik heb lange tijd elke dag voor een vriend gebeden. Ik geloof echt dat je moet bidden voor een vriend, dat je samen God mag eren. Maar ook dat Hij uit Zijn rechterhand een vriend zal schenken, tot Zijn eer en glorie. Ik ben erg in de war en ik heb het vaker in het leven, niet alleen met deze situatie. Hoe weet ik of de Heere mijn gebed verhoort? Of is dit om mijn geweten tevreden te stellen door tegen mezelf te zeggen dat het van de Heere komt?

In de Bijbel sprak God vaak door dromen en visioenen. Toen was er in die tijd voor die mensen nog geen Bijbel. Bij moslims bijvoorbeeld spreekt God nog vaak tot hen in een droom. Die droom is niet hun bekering, maar meestal leidt die droom tot de Bijbel waardoor er echte bekering komt. Bij jou gaat het over iets van het dagelijks leven. Het feit dat je over dat onderwerp droomt kun je ook verklaren vanuit een meer bewust of onbewust verlangen om een vriend te hebben. Toch wil ik niet ontkennen dat de Heere nog wel eens via een droom ons iets wil zeggen. Je hebt lange tijd om een vriend gebeden. Dat is goed. Zeker ook dat het je gaat om iemand die de Heere vreest.
Je schrijft ook dat je wel eens in de war bent, ook over andere dingen. Daarom is het juist goed als je aan anderen om raad vraagt. Hoe je weet of de Heere je gebed verhoort is niet zo eenvoudig uit te leggen. De Heere hoort altijd ons gebed. Of Hij het verhoort zoals wij het bedoelen is niet altijd zo. Het kan ook op een andere manier verhoren, terwijl dat soms veel beter voor ons is.
Of de Heere nu werkelijk tot je sprak in die droom over het zoeken van een vriend kan ik niet zomaar uitmaken. Het zou kunnen zijn. In ieder geval ben je door die droom wel op een idee gebracht. Ik denk dat het belangrijk is dat er een overtuiging in je groeit dat je er goed aan doet om naar Nederland te gaan om kennis te maken met een vriend. Als dat een sterke overtuiging wordt, kun je dat opnieuw aan de Heere voorleggen. Je zou in je hart een besluit kunnen nemen en zien of de Heere daar vrede op geeft in je hart. In zo’n geval heb je het in ieder geval geprobeerd. Misschien bevestigt de Heere wel door zijn Woord of zo’n besluit goed is of niet.
Eigenlijk denk ik dat je een pastoraal gesprek nodig hebt met iemand die je daarbij kan helpen om bepaalde zaken te duiden in je leven. Meer kan ik er nu niet over zeggen.

Try to discover the meaning of your feeling you had before. Was it a 'maybe' or a certain thing you would find somebody in NL? Have no false hopes in this, and don't have any expectations as it shouldn't become some kind of demand. It also could be a call to do something in a direction, just to discover, learn or having a new experience that will enrich you.
In any way: Stay patient and keep active ('pray and work') as your answer could take a while to take form.
In the first place, it would be good to make a distinction between those that fear the LORD and those that do not. Those that belong to the first category have no promises in Scripture that God will hear their prayers for daily needs. However, those that do belong to the LORD, are guaranteed that the LORD will provide for their needs as a Father. Of course, it can be a challenge to know whether you would belong to the LORD or not. That can give much fear, doubt, and questions. Even our godly forefathers wrote about this and tried to give helps for obtain such surety. Think of the Canons of Dordt (I believe chapter 5), and the Westminster Confession of Faith about the Assurance of Faith. I would like to ask you that question, what category do you belong to? Or if that is too high, has there been a knowledge of sin and a longing for Christ? A turning from sin and desire to walk in the ways of the LORD?
Second, why do you pray for certain matters? In your question, I see that it is your desire that having a boyfriend and marry is for the glory of God, rather than fulfilling your own desires (as you wanted in the past). I would argue that this is the right purpose. This does not always mean that the LORD will fulfill our wishes. Think of David who wanted to build the temple for the LORD. Though his desire was good, the LORD had other plans. Always finish such prayers with, "Thy will be done." At the same time, I would add, that the fervent prayers of the righteous availeth much (James 5:16). This would mean that an answer on the first point is necessary.

The follow up question is not whether God speaks through dreams, but does He still do it today? As the minister says in the answer above, God certainly does among Muslims. Often this is among those that do not have the Word of God. In your case, the question might be, is that also among Christians? Personally, I am sure to say, "Yes." The LORD does still speak through dreams. At the same time, we need to be careful to argue that each dream comes from the LORD. The Bible is clear that certain dreams come from the business of mind (Eccl. 5:3). Interestingly, you mentioned in your question that this matter was no longer in your mind. See if the LORD helps you in being busy with that matter. Though it might be difficult at times, see if the matter remains or that it fades away.
